UAE: Sharp increase in fruit and vegetable prices
For the past two weeks, fruit and vegetable prices in the markets of Dubai and Sharjah have increased by up to 57%, while in Abu Dhabi the price increase is as high as 75%.
Traders say that the reason for this are the seasonal changes for many products, with shortages of many crops, combined with lower direct imports as a result of political unrest at the countries of origin and growing logistics costs.
In Dubai and Sharjah, the price of cucumbers of Jordanian origin has increased by between 56 and 57%, while that of domestic origin is now between 33 and 40% more expensive. Lettuce, for of Jordanian and domestic origin, registers between 28.5 and 33% higher prices; tomato prices have grown by between 20 and 25% and green peppers of Jordanian origin are between 33 and 40% more expensive.
Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi the price of tomatoes increased by up to 75%, courgette prices increased by 42.8%, while aubergines have become 66.6% more expensive.
Fruits have also registered sharp price increases, with kiwis reaching up to 60% higher values, while apples, pears and different varieties of oranges have seen their prices grow by around 20%. Different varieties of grapes are between 20 and 28% more expensive, and peach prices have increased by around 20%.
