Italy: Food safety is crucial- the EU needs to be braver

According to the the latest Sofi report presented by FAO with Ifad and Pam, the number of undernourished people in the world has dropped by 100 million in the last ten years and 200 million in 20 years. Despite this, there are still 805 million people worldwide who still do not have enough food.

According to the report, halving world hunger by the year 2015 is feasible, "but only if efforts are intensified. 63 developing countries have already won this challenge, and another six are doing well."

Progress is not really uniform though: some areas, like Latin America and Caribbean, are improving, whereas there is still a lot to be done in others like Western Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. In order to defeat hunger, public and private investments must be made to increase productivity and guarantee better access to land, services, technology and markets.

The conclusions and recommendations of Sofi will be discussed during the Committee on World Food Security meeting to be held on October 13-18.

Minister Martina: food security is crucial, the EU needs to be braver
Maurizio Martina, Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, said that "answers are needed to halve world hunger by 2015. It is not just an objective, it's a political commitment. Italy alone counts 4 million people who have difficulty accessing food. We must find effective solutions, this is why Italy chose to dedicate its Expo to this issue."

"Milan will be a great platform to discuss policies, agricultural models and the best practices to adopt in the next decades. The future of the planet also depends how we manage to solve the hunger issue and achieve sustainable economic models and a better management of resources. We will have six months to confront ourselves with over 140 countries."

"The objective is guaranteeing enough healthy food to a world population that will reach 9 billion people by 2050. That is why we have decided that the Informal meeting of the EU Ministers of Agriculture - to be held in Milan on Sept. 28-30 - will focus on food safety. During the Expo, we will also organise a global agricultural forum that will involve the ministers of the 148 participating countries."
