More and more Austrians buying fair trade

Austrians are spending more money on fair trade products, reports the Austrian website heute.at. In the first half of 2014 sales of fair trade products rose 11%, to 69.9 million Euro. In 2013 sales had already rose by more than one-fifth. More than 14.5 million Euro of direct revenue flowed into Asia, Africa and Latin America in the first half of the year.

This year sales increased mainly due to coffee (+18%), candy (+25%) and cotton products (+55%). Flowers, bananas and fruit juices stayed at the same level as last year. Looking at total sales, fair trade fruit makes up the largest product group in Austria, followed by coffee/tea, flowers, alcohol free drinks and candy.
