Concerns over garlic prices brought up in June were confirmed on the market in July. 2013 saw a large influx of Spanish garlic (mainly white) on the market at low prices (€1.20/kg), of heterogeneous quality and a decrease in consumption.
Purple garlic is currently being sold for €2.04 a plait and €1.81/kg in sachets on the market in Cadours.
One producer says that it is a pity that people are not keeping the promise made over the last general assembly and are destabilising the market, let alone the large retailers who are selling Argentinian, Spanish and Chinese garlic at the price of a local quality product.
It is important to stick together through hard times, and if possible to avoid direct costs such as packaging (sachets, plaits) with negotiators as these effect the market price. A sensorial study is currently being carried out on purple Cadours garlic to strengthen their request for an AOC in October.
