'Deutsches Gold': a rare tomato
It's only available for a short period of time: the rare beef tomato from Germany, with the name 'Deutsches Gold'. Klaus Trübenecker and his daughter Simone sell the tomato at their stand at the Viktualienmarkt in Munich, German website tz.de reports.
Worldwide, there are 2,500 different tomato varieties. But it's often difficult to buy tomatoes with a really good flavour. The old tomato variety 'Deutsches Gold', however, is highly recommended. This yellow/orange, very juicy beef tomato has an excellent, sweet and mild flavour, which is slightly reminiscent of mango. This rare tomato is a heavyweight, with hardly any pips. Its skin is thin and soft. "It's only available for four weeks every year," Simone Trübenecker says.
'Deutsches Gold' is best eaten raw, sprinkled with salt and olive oil. At the Trübenecker bio stand, the tomatoes come from Austrian Bürgenland, from the Binder farm. Their price is 6.90 Euro per kilo.
