Belgian farmers give up on rhubarb

Whilst rhubarb is a classic vegetable in the region, it is increasingly rare to see fields of it growing. Less and less farmers are growing rhubarb.

Farmer, José Druart, almost gave up on this vegetable as well because rhubarbs are profitable but only if one can find a buyer. Every year it is an effort to find a buyer. The first harvest usually sells well, but for the second ''we are told there is too much. Or it comes directly from abroad.
Last time, at the factory, I saw trailer loads full of rhubarb, rhubarb which was not grown here''. With all of this imported rhubarb he almost gave up on his own production. ''Under the same conditions, as in €240 a ton, i.e. 24 cents per kilo. When I see the difference to prices in shops (€4, even €5 sometimes), it is enormous'' says the producer.
