Germany: difficult strawberry season

From week 10 this year strawberries of various origins started arriving on German wholesale markets. There were mainly Spanish, Italian and some Dutch strawberries on the market from week 10 to 15. There was even some supply from Belgium in week 17. German supply joined in in week 16 and this supply grew rapidly week by week. What is striking is that the share of Dutch strawberries has remained mostly the same, apart from in week 24 when the share of strawberries was almost 100% of German origin.

(Below charts in German)

The supply of various origins from week 10 to week 14. The dark red is Germany. Light green: Spain, dark green: the Netherlands and Italy is red.

As far as price was concerned it was not positive. Compared to the spring of 2013, it was a lot lower, sometimes even a difference of 4.50 per kilo in week 22. In week 24 the prices were back at the same level as last year, very low, around 1.80.
