India: 2400kg of artificially ripened mangoes destroyed

Officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) health department destroyed 2400 Kg of mangoes that were ripened artificially in Mahatma Gandhi Market located on Surat-Bardoli road. They also seized 30 kg of Carbide, a chemical used for artificial ripening of fruits.

As people await the arrival of fresh mangoes grown in different parts of South Gujarat, some traders in Market located out side APMC market on Suart-Bardoli road were trying to make a quick buck by ripening mangoes through unnatural means.

"Artificial ripening of mangoes by using carbide could be harmful to the consumers of the fruits and we won't allow traders employing unethical and unlawful practices to make a quick buck." Said an official from health department of Limbayat zone.

The whole quantity worth Rs 200,000 ($3,300 USD) was taken to a disposal plant located in Khajod and destroyed.

At present, artificially ripened Mangoes are selling at many places in the city at the price of Rs 70 to Rs90 per kg. ($1.15-$1.48 USD)

SMC officials have said that they would keep destroying artificially ripened fruits from all places in the city.
