Cherry tomato on the rise in Switzerland

The Swiss love tomatoes. However, recently the consumption of cherry tomatoes has exploded. Since 2005 the consumption of cherry tomatoes in Switzerland has more than doubled. In 2013 the country produced 7,558 tonnes of cherry tomatoes and imported another 12.721 tons. That amounts to a consumption of 2.52 Kilos per person. The consumption of larger tomatoes is even greater at 7.59 Kilos per person, but cherry tomatoes are catching up. Only a small proportion of the cherry tomatoes are grown in fields. The greater proportion are grown in glasshouses.
