Although the Yaqui Valley's asparagus planting surface has been growing, it is still not enough to meet the demands the international market requires, as one does not have the volume of production required for this niche, according to Manuel Antonio Cázares Castro .
The president of the Association of Greenhouse Vegetables Producers of Sonora state has reported that there is currently a great demand for horticultural product, but that the Yaqui Valley does not have much capacity.
He specifies that harvesting began weeks ago in some areas of the Yaqui Valley, but with few results, due to the crops recency
He notes that because there is currently insufficient product available, prices have increased. Countries like Canada, the U.S. and China are the main customers of this vegetable.
He stresses that Peru was one of the leading exporters, but because it started producing low quality standards, the United States opted for other providers, and hence Mexico is able to enter this niche market.
He indicates that they are still harvesting in Yaqui Valley, and that in the coming days they will begin doing so in the Caborca area, which is where most of the region's production occurs.
He adds that there is a little over two thousand hectares of asparagus in the Yaqui Valley, and due to the increasing demand for this vegetable the sowing area could increase in the coming years.
