Italy: Positive planning for potatoes, but consumption is still low

During a meeting held on 25th October 2013, the Commissioner Paritetica della Borsa Patate of Bologna analysed the productive and commercial situation of potato-growing in Europe and confirmed a decrease in potato production in Northern Europe, and in Germany in particular.

This situation enables us to maintain a positive trend in the market. The Italian situation during this phase does not worry operators but still there is a drop in consumption due to the economy and the weather. The trend of brands like Selenella® is positive, as volumes sold are increasing.

The meeting also served to comply with what was envisaged by the Framework Agreement. In particular, production costs were analysed and a list of operations to assess the processing and packaging costs of warehouse potatoes was drawn up. The minimum price of second grade produce and of those not complying with size criteria was also defined.
