AU: Laser used to scare magpie geese away from mangoes
In his arsenal of bird-scaring techniques is a high-powered laser. Mr Siah says the geese are easily spooked by the laser and fly off as soon as the green beam of light approaches. "If they're flying, they're not eating, which is better for me and good for my property," he said.
Mr Siah is also using a high-pitched siren, as well as traditional gas guns, including one that is strapped to his quad bike which he uses to patrol his plantation. "It's all saving me money and the geese, I think, now view this area as a danger," he said. "Just using a gas gun is just one sound, but if you have a mixture of 'noise warfare' and a laser as well, it does deter them and you don't have to kill the bird. We're winning right now, but who knows in a couple of weeks, they could get smart."
Last year, Mr Siah estimated he lost nearly a third of his crop to birds.
