Italy: Drop in banana imports

The Central Bank of Ecuador published data that show a drastic reduction of shipments towards Italy (-44.2%, from 122 million dollars in the first semester of 2012 to only 68 in the same period of 2013.) FreshPlaza contacted Vittorio Grotta, CEO of Dole Italia, for a comment.

"The drop in banana shipments from Ecuador towards some destinations is probably due to the fact that some importers have increased the volumes of bananas from other origins such as Costa Rica, Colombia and ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific- under the French, British and Spanish influence) at the expense of Ecuador."

Vittorio Grotta.

"The reason behind this could be connected to quantities available and therefore to prices. In Ecuador, in fact, there is less produce than in the past years. In Autumn though things could get back to normal. It is difficult to know whether it will lead to a change, especially considering logistics and therefore the availability of transport."

As regards the Italian market, the CEO refers that "from the data I have, the drop of imports in Italy (from all origins) was of 3.1% in June 2013."

A 7% drop in the imports of bananas on the Italian market had already happened in 2012, in fact they went from 661,936 tons in 2011 to 615,826 tons in 2012.
