Up until almost two years ago, Carlos Pastorino Wagner (now CPW Produce Direct) had a commercial partnership with Complejo Agroindustrial Beta, from Peru, and the company Alpine Fresh, from Miami, with the common goal of opening new direct markets for the products that these companies produce and export. It dealt, from the Netherlands, with clients in the Scandinavian countries, Germany, Italy, Switzerland (and other European countries), the Middle East, China and South East Asia.
After reaching that goal, the commercial partnership finished on good terms, with the decision that each handled their clients from their origins, which led CPW Produce Direct to return to the export activities for which it currently has about 30 years' experience, mainly with the United States, UK, Germany, France and other countries in Europe.
CPW Produce Direct is not a firm, but a direct service provided by its founder, Carlos Pastorino Wagner between different origins and final clients, which aims to benefit both parties. "Producers from any origin cover, with their products the orders that I process with the firms which I represent and I receive an agreed fee from each importer depending on the value of the produce we are dealing with," explains Carlos.
For example, in one of CPW's deals with a company in the United States, they managed to become the largest green asparagus importers between 1986 and 2005, supplying the East Coast of the US; a market which, nowadays, is well-supplied by various firms, such as Alpine Fresh and its Peruvian suppliers.
For green asparagus it works mainly with Italy, Switzerland, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. In citrus it basically deals with mandarins and Minneolas with service providers in the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden and China. One of the immediate projects is to increase the volumes and varieties of various products with importers in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Denmark.
Red Globe grapes are shipped mostly to China and South East Asia and this year they expect to increase their shipments to the Middle East. Seedless varieties such as the Crimson, Flame and Thompson go mainly to Germany and the UK, and this year Sweden will also receive them. "Volumes for these varieties are not very large yet in Peru and the US market tends to absorb most of the supplies. Europe is a market we also need to consider, despite the fact that the US offers higher average prices at the moment with shorter maritime transit times," says Carlos.
"We had an average avocado campaign, with shipments of the Hass variety going mostly to France and some to Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. Additionally, Ettinger and Zutano (green skin) avocados went to destinations like Italy and the UK, with very good results, especially for the early harvests of these varieties."
For the near future, CPW is preparing a big Kent mango campaign; it also has Chilean blueberries, Mexican blackberries and it is working with Chilean apples for the Chinese and European markets.
During the phase with Beta and Alpine Fresh, supply contracts were reached with supermarket chains such as Coop in Denmark, Norway and its subsidiary in Finland; Edeka in Germany, Albert Heijn in the Netherlands and other chains in Italy and France through service providers, which are still directly supplied by these companies.
Its suppliers are all certified by GlobalGAP, HACCP, BRC and also Fairtrade in the case of bananas.
