"Wim: "Good old fashioned flavour with these vegetables and fruit"

"Fruit Vandepoel introduces "Lowie's garden" brand"

Wholesaler Fruit Vandepoel introduced its brand La Fleur Magique over 15 years ago. Mid June 2013 the company introduced a new brand named 'De tuin van Lowie' (Lowie's garden). "This is an entirely different concept from our other brand," says owner Wim Vandepoel. "La Fleur Magique is our more commercial brand for fruit that is of sublime quality, look, and taste. the 'Lowie's garden' brand is meant for products that are grown on a smaller, more authentic scale."

Reminiscent of the old days
"We started with cherries and strawberries, but the certification will be used for more products, like apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, melons, baby cauliflower, and baby beans. As we are taking this concept to a whole different concept, you will find the older 'forgotten', but tasty varieties amongst these products. The boxes and promotional materials are designed in such a way that it reminds you of the old days. To cut a long story short, we go back in time with these fruits, when growing still happened in a small-scale, traditional way. The vegetables and fruit are harvested ripe, making the taste come into its own."

Authentic, traditional, and full of taste
"The word that describes these products is traditional. There are growers that grow special strawberry varieties, for instance, which are usually very tasty varieties. That is why these growers shouldn't be lost in the crowd, or be forced to switch over to commercial varieties. They are varieties that cannot be grown in large quantities because their shelf life is less than that of commercial varieties. Peaches and nectarines are added later in the season to the cherries and strawberries. These are ripened on the tree and sold by us in that way to selected shop owners. The idea came about to focus on the special varieties and to put more emphasis on taste. We don't intend to generate more income with this product, but to develop a distinction to artisan varieties. We chose the brand name because 'Lowie' is a good old-fashioned name and we named our youngest son that as well," concludes Wim.
