Excellent harvests of new strawberry and raspberry varieties for Berry Gardens

With Berry Gardens’ growers’ strawberry and raspberry season in full swing, the first year’s production of new varieties of Driscoll and public variety berries are matching expectations in terms of excellent shape, colour, taste and yield. Across the new strawberry varieties growers are extending the season, with high volumes of fruit being available to satisfy the growing supermarket demand for early Summer fruit.

The new varieties are exciting additions to berries available in the market and include:

  • Flair – developed by Flevoplant, Netherlands – Starts the season providing good early yields, with deep red berries and a consistent shape. This strawberry has an excellent sweet flavour.
  • Vibrant – developed at East Malling Research, which offers excellent fruit shape and deep red colour, a lighter flavour than some other berries.
  • Driscoll’s® Solero™ – Offers high yielding plants, consistent larger size fruit with a good conical shape, bright red colour and strong lasting taste.
  • Driscoll’s® Scarlet™ – Consistent shaped berries, with glossy, red colour and sweet flavour.
  • Driscoll’s® Serena™ – Conical shaped fruit, that is glossy, very bright red colour and with a full-bodied taste.
  • Driscoll’s® Margarita™ Raspberry – Elongated conical shaped berries, which are bright red and glossy with a consistent balanced flavour.
The introduction of these new berry varieties provides opportunities to extend the production season for British strawberries, beginning earlier and going on later in the Autumn.

Alastair Brooks of BR Brooks & Sons, Langdon Manor Farm, and vice chairman of Berry Gardens commented. “This year we are very excited about our tasty strawberry crop. Our expectations are for excellent volumes of exceptional fruit with a planned extension to our growing season”.
