Garlic harvest begins with fear of China's low prices

Garlic producers from the region of Antequera, Spain, are watching the situation in China very closely, waiting for confirmation on the news about a good garlic campaign in Asia, which would entail very negative consequences for the Spanish production as a result of their low prices. "At the moment, nobody dares to pay 1.20 Euro for garlic," explains Asaja member, Jerónimo Jiménez.

China ships 10 kilo boxes priced at 7 dollars plus 1.20 Euro in taxes. "Nobody can compete with those prices," affirms a producer from Antequera, who also complains about not competing on equal terms, as Spanish and Chinese producers are not requested to meet the same production standards.

Meanwhile, the production of Chinese garlic has been good this year, while purple garlic volumes could fall by 15%, as the right temperature conditions for their adequate growth and development were not met during the month of May.

This year, around 600 hectares of garlic have been planted in Antequera, which will offer a yield of around 16,000 kilos per hectare for the Chinese garlic variety and between 11,000 and 12,000 for purple garlic, although in the latter's case, it is a less popular variety, as it has a smaller market with exports going mainly to England, all of this with a cost of between 9,000 and 10,000 Euro per planted hectare.
