Petrol station shops in Austria more often owned by supermarket chains
Petrol station shops are experiencing a recovery in Austria, according to the Austrian website orf.at. Spar and Billa Merkur have also entered into a close cooperation agreement with the petrol stations. In a cooperation like this both parties profit: the petrol stations try to compensate the decreasing sale of fuel and the trading chains want to increase their turnover and market share.
Merkur, part of the Rewe-concern, want to open towards the end of 2014 together with BP, three or four petrol station shops every month with the name 'Merkur inside'. At the moment there are about 80 establishments planned.
The Rewe-concern has been represented already at about 125 Jet-petrol stations together with Billa and here as well 130 new establishments are planned.
"We regard this as a meaningful extension of our working area," says Rewe spokesman Ines Schurin. "The shops at the petrol stations take care of an interesting extension of the presence of the brand."
