Spain: Potato prices likely to increase due to low production

This year is again being complicated for the European potato market as a result of shortages caused by adverse weather conditions, which affected many producing countries. The situation is consequently leading to an increase in prices, as supply has become greater than demand. In Spain's case, a low production is expected and prices will likely tend to rise.

For the first potatoes of the season, those from Malaga, the harvest has gone through ups and downs because of rains and the production has been lower than last year. Cartagena's new potatoes, which are the next to arrive, are starting to be harvested now and the production will be similar to last year's. "In Andalusia it is still too early to know; the harvest has not started yet and we don't know how the crop will have been affected by the recent rains," explains Pablo Jiménez, manager of Ibérica de Patatas.

Despite it still being early, there is already a stock of potatoes, although volumes are still low. "Murcia is still harvesting, Andalusia has not started and Castilla-León did the planting later as a result of some weather issues," he points out.

Ibérica de Patatas is firmly committed to national growers. The majority of its production comes from Spain: Andalusia and Castilla-León, with some smaller supply from other provinces. Additionally, to be able to meet its supply commitments all year long, Ibérica de Patatas also counts with leading providers from France and other European countries.

Within the wide range of varieties produced by Ibérica de Patatas, the firm has included some new ones in small amounts, "although the one best fitting the current market situation is the Monalisa, which is strongly demanded," affirms Pablo Jiménez.
