Pakistan's largest produce market gutted by fire

Fruit and vegetable traders have suffered huge losses after Pakistan's largest produce wholesale market, in Karachi, was hit by a large fire. Losses are estimated to be in the region of Rs 200 million ($2 million US).

The traders have been quick to threaten the government with strike action if they do not receive rapid relief.

8 sheds, out of a total of 11, were hit by the blaze, which also spread to nearby buildings and parked vehicles.

All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable and Exporters and Merchant Association Chairman Waheed Ahmad said the blaze had spread towards a storage site for gas used to extend produce shelf life.

Thankfully the flames were brought under control before they reached the site.
