"Israeli pepper market increases considerably"

Up until two weeks ago we had had a rather poor Israeli pepper season as far a price level was concerned. But last week there was a change in the market and at the moment prices are very good. "It's going very well. If these prices keep up for a while, we might be able to make it a reasonable season," says Frank Mosterd of Gilad Produce. "There is mainly a shortage of the smaller counted sizes."

"Production in Israel was very limited, because it has been very cold. The peppers were on the plant, but weren't colouring," continues the importer. "Now the supply is getting started a bit again, but we have the benefit of Spain having less supply. I have good hopes for the market, until at least Easter. After that the programmes with Dutch peppers will start again, and we'll have to see how the market develops, but we will continue with Israeli peppers until at least mid April."

The price of red peppers is around 14/15 Euro (XL/L) to 18/19 Euro for the counted sizes. The yellow and orange peppers are being sold for 16/17 Euro (XL/L) and 18/19 Euro (counted sizes). "The demand is quite broad. The United Kingdom and Germany have a high demand, but there has also been a huge demand from Russia in the last week, where the International Day of Women on the 9th of March is causing a lot of extra demand."
