Raymond van den Burgh, Europe Retail Packing:

"Europe: "Basil shortage is going to last a while"

Due to a heavy storm in Israel at the beginning of this month, along with crop disease, a shortage of basil has developed. "I am hearing from left and right that this could last for another month," says Raymond van den Burgh from Europe Retail Packing.

A heavy storm raged across Israel last month. Combined with crop problems, this has led to a basil shortage. "Due to the crop disease, we had to completely cut back the crops. The storm meant that a portion of the crops had to be re-planted," reports Raymond van den Burgh from Europe Retail Packing. "We are filling the gap made by the shortage with products from Kenya, but this will not be enough." The price of basil has increased dramatically. Van den Burgh expects the situation to stay the same for another month. "This is what I am hearing around town."

According to Van den Burgh, the supply of other herbs is reasonably stable. "With the exception of tarragon, which is pretty much in the same situation. January is always a difficult month for crops. Christmas takes a large amount of the supply and now is the time to grow to catch up. The weather is relatively stable, but the nights are still cold."
