Netherlands: Booming business at Leo Ammerlaan
Now that business is booming, breeder Leo Ammerlaan is active 24 hours a day. In a single week, as many as 1 million plants might leave the grounds. “Peppers are really peaking right now,” says owner John Ammerlaan. “Tomatoes are more spread.”
Busy days for John Ammerlaan
The company employs over 200 workers at the moment. There is the continuous motion of people seeding, planting, grafting and loading. As Ammerlaan also propagates ornamental crop, specialists are working with young plants all year round. This activity is not likely to slow down in the coming weeks: the expected peak, the export to France and the UK, is still to come.
Grafting, planting and loading goes on all day long.
Recently the company invested in a new grafting machine. “The old one was a little hard to adjust,” John explains. “It also had some hygiene issues. Now we are experimenting with this one. But the quality really has to improve before we turn to working with machines exclusively. There is a golden rule for al change: don’t rush it. Every move you make has to improve the company.”
