NZ: Trevelyan's wins 2012 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Award

After winning the Regional Award for the Bay of Plenty earlier this year, Trevelyan’s is proud to win the 2012 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Award, in the Emerging Large/Corporate category on Thursday, November 22 at The Cloud in Auckland. The judges felt that Trevelyan’s Pack and Cool was a clear winner. It is using sustainability to innovate, at a time when the kiwifruit industry is under pressure from Psa and the Global Financial Crisis. The company say that, despite these pressures the reality of Climate Change remains and it was time to do something about it – tomorrow is too late.

Trevelyan’s are commited to sustainability. To name just a few of their success stories, Trevelyan’s have reduced their waste to landfill by 85% since 2009 through a comprehensive recycling program, saving in excess of $35,000 annually. They have had a 45% reduction in carbon emissions between 2010 and 2011 and saved $23,000 in electricity in 2011 through reducing usage at peak demand times. After holding a staff wellness day for health assessment last year, Trevelyan’s have continued to focus on staff health and wellbeing. They now have a morning running/walking group and offer a Pilates class. Moreover, a loan facility is available for staff emergency use.

Alister Hawkey, Trevelyan’s executive director says that "profit and efficiency are very important and an initiative like this will save money. It must support grower profits and should not be a cost to the business."
