UK: Barfoots reinvigorate sweetcorn category

Following its successful launch in 2011 Barfoots of Botley brand ʼSweetcorn Bitesʼ
has unveiled their latest innovation to reinvigorate the sweetcorn category.

The new ʻSnack Bitesʼ format is a category first and targets the health conscious
consumers whose lifestyles are food rich but time poor. The handy size packs feature four bite size nibbles and provide the perfect healthy ʻon the goʼ solution for kids and adults alike.

ʻSince the launch of Sweetcorn Bites we have seen continual growth in terms of
sales penetration and repeat purchase," explains James Meers, Business Manager at Barfoots. "As with all new products the first year has focused on getting customers to buy into the brand and enjoy the experience. The data surrounding the bites clearly shows that once shoppers make the purchase they enjoy the product. This in turn has provided continued to loyalty to the offer.

"As we move into the winter months, sweetcorn sales traditionally slow, so as a
business we are always looking to innovate. Product development and pack
formulations such as Snack Bites will help reverse that trend."

The new format allows for merchandising versatility with packs now able to
showcase in both the retail fixture or on hanging ʻclip stripsʼ. This flexibility opens up
avenues for sales in the traditional multiples along with C formats, food service
outlets and service stations.

The packaging has also been developed to increase shelf life whilst enabling a reduced cook time.

Meers goes on to say that the convenience market is something that in many ways passes the fresh produce industry by, especially the vegetable categories.
"We are actively looking to change that and are already planning the next phase of
exciting development which will again move the offer forward with the aim of
attracting more consumers especially those in the 16 – 30 age bracket.
Our work with the Nandos group has given us access to a range of insights that will
allow us to continue innovating in a fresh and exciting way."

ʻSnack Bitesʼ are priced at £1 and are available at Co-Operative stores nationwide.
