CA: Greenhouse tomatoes wrap up

The season for greenhouse produce coming out of the Canadian province of Ontario is coming to an end in the next two weeks, and this year has been a mixed bag. While cucumbers and peppers have been okay, the market for greenhouse tomatoes, like conventional tomatoes, has been overrun with an over-abundance of product.

“For tomatoes, we had a very good season in terms of quality and volume, but the prices weren't there,” said Danny Pulcinelli of Ontario-based Del Fresco Produce. Their other greenhouse offerings fared much better, but the large quantity of tomatoes on the market this year depressed prices.

“There were ideal growing conditions everywhere, so there was an oversupply,” said Pulcinelli. “Prices got so low that they were below the costs of production.”

Del Fresco has finished their greenhouse growing for the season, and Pulcinelli predicted that all greenhouse growers will finish up their vegetables by next week.
