US: Boskovich Farms aims to simplify eating healthy

With the aim of getting more people to eat fruit that is typically hard to cut and prepare, Boskovich Farms is rolling out fruit that takes the grunt work out of eating healthy. They highlighted Seper's Fruti Fruit line of pre-cut fruit at their booth during this year's PMA Fresh Summit conference.

“We want to change the way we eat fruit, to make healthy eating easy,” said Erica Sommers, business development manager at Boskovich Farms. “With that in mind, we've taken some of the harder to eat fruit that you have to cut up, like pineapples, mangoes and melons, and packaged them so they're easy to eat.” The packaging also makes it easier to eat fruit since it gives the cut fruit a relatively long shelf life.

“The patent-pending method of processing the fruit means that the packaging serves as a sort of second skin,” said Sommers. “So we can achieve a 30 day shelf life for pineapples, mangoes and grapefruit, and about a two-week shelf life for melons and pomegranates.”

Cyrus Seper, who developed the line's packaging, said that it tackles one of the obstacles to eating healthy, which is the convenience aspect.

“If, in order to eat french fries, you had to peel the potatoes, cut them, fry them and season them, you wouldn't eat them. But we eat them because they're convenient,” he said. “What we want to do is making eating healthy more convenient so people eat healthier.”
