US: Pure Flavor packaging receives PMA recognition

The PMA Impact award recognizes innovation and excellence in fresh produce packaging, and as a finalist for this year's Impact award, Pure Flavor has been recognized for the convenience and innovative nature of their products.

Pure Flavor is a finalist for this year's Impact award for their Fresh Cuts line of pre-cut produce. The convenience that Pure Flavor's ready-to-eat, ready-to-cook vegetables brings is further enhanced by its packaging, explained Ken Paglione of Pure Flavor.

"Consumers love the versatility of the product because they can bring it home, season it and cook it in about 15 minutes," he said. But the real innovation comes from the many ways the vegetables can be prepared. "The vegetables can be cooked in an oven, and even in a barbecue they can be grilled, but they can also be microwaved." A specially-coated aluminum tray is unique in that it doesn't spark when put in a microwave, so it's safe to simply remove the plastic film and pop the entire package in the microwave.

"It's a healthy, convenient way for consumers to eat more vegetables," added Sarah Pau of Pure Flavor. "It's high on convenience, high on technology and it's economical because you don't have to buy as many vegetables to get a good variety." Paglione also noted that the packaging is not only good for consumers, but also for the environment.

"The entire package is recyclable," he said. "The aluminum can be recycled, so it's very green. We very much kept that in mind when we developed this packaging, as well as making sure every package is individually labeled in order to enhance traceability." He added that traceability is important in order to enhance food safety, which is something they take very seriously.

"We have high standards for our vegetables," he said. "Everything is triple-washed in a retrofitted facility specifically for our fresh cut vegetables. It's an additional level of food safety."

Going forward, they plan on adding a wider variety of vegetables to their Fresh Cuts line including a grilling pack with pineapples and blueberries and a grilling kabob kit. They also plan on continuing development of more materials for their packaging because, Paglione says, they're always thinking about how to improve.

"We make improvements all the time," he said. "I think that shows our commitment to working to provide customers a great product."
