UK: Rain driving potato blight in Scotland

Potato blight has now been found in all major potato growing areas of Scotland and the infestation levels are well above the average expected.

Eric Anderson, of Scottish Agronomy, however, is confident that growers can deal with the problem. He said, "With modern chemistry used in the right combination, we can get control of foliar blight."

Growers listening to him talk at a recent farm open day in Fife heard how the current strains are more virulent than any seen before, with the capacity to multiply faster than pre 2005 blight strains.

The weather has been the main problem this year when it comes to trying to control the disease. Anderson said this year's crop was behind by two - three weeks and their would less of a yield when the harvest did arrive.
