Less asparagus and strawberries in Sachsen-Anhalt
In the German federal state of Sachsen-Anhalt the asparagus and strawberries received only a little rain. The quality actually did not suffer because of this but the quantity has, as can be seen on the German website halleforum.de.
"As asparagus are deep in the soil they protected themselves against the too strong sunbeams" as per Martin Rümschüssel, chairman of the agrarian cooperative Hohenseeden. As a result the quality of the asparagus is good. But nevertheless the growers now expect, about halfway in the harvesting period, that they will harvest less asparagus than last year. "Up till the middle of June we will probably harvest about 500 tons,"
Rümschüssel says. "In 2011 we had harvested about 800 tons at the end of the harvesting period."
Also strawberry lovers will receive strawberries of good quality from Sachsen-Anhalt, but less fruit. "The strawberries are smaller this year because of the little rain, but instead of that they are sweeter," Claudia Funck of the family company 'Erdbeeren Funck' says.
For the agrarians in Sachsen-Anhalt the asparagus is of great importance. Strawberries, however, are regarded as a minor product. According to figures supplied by the Ministry of Agriculture this year in Sachsen-Anhalt on an area of
