EU lifts Serbia potato ban

The EU has lifted its import ban on Serbian potatoes. The ban was originally issued in 2000, but has been removed after the country managed to eradicate the Clavibacter michiganensis ssp sepedonicus bacteria.

It is thought that Serbia has the capacity to grow 1 million tonnes of potato over 100,00 ha. Currently cultivation takes place over 78,000 ha and produces in the region of 900,000 tonnes per year.

An export market for potatoes is important to Serbia as domestic consumption is relatively low at 35.7 kg per capita. This is higher in other Eu nations, for example,
58,7 kilograms in Germany and 51,1 kilograms in France, Austria holds the average at 55,8 kilograms, the Czech Republic has the average consumption at 69,5 kilograms, Italy at 44,7 kilograms.
