Israel: Avniv expect exceptional grapes

Avniv, an Israeli grower and exporter of fresh produce, will begin shipping grapes and figs this month. While both figs and grapes look good, this year's grape crop is of particular note.

"The grapes are amazing this season," said Niva Ben Zion, founder and CEO of Avniv. "We've had a nice yield, big berry, sweet and good quality, and lots of volume, too." According to Niva, Avniv could export up to 300 tons of grapes this year to Europe's larger markets like the UK, Netherlands and Russia. Because the first grapes of the season are of such good quality, she added that Avniv will pack them in ziplock bags for export. The bags, in turn, will be shipped in 4.5 kilogram boxes.

Avniv has also begun shipping figs to Asia, South Africa and major European markets. According to Niva, a major selling point for their figs, which are almost entirely sold to supermarkets, is the specialty nature of the product.

"The thing with figs is that we're now going into special varieties," she said. "Green figs, zebra figs and pear figs – these are all unique and exclusive." Last year, they exported 110 tons of figs, the majority of which went to the UK, and Niva hopes this year they can improve on that figure.

"We export to Hong Kong, South Africa, Netherlands, Scandinavian countries and Germany," she said. "And this year we're aiming to do more. We want to expand into other markets as well."
