Italy: Harvest of Tyde watermelons starts in Marsala

The harvest of Tyde watermelons in the area of Marsala (Sicily-Italy) has started some days earlier than last year.

As Paolo Nunzio Raudino, supply manager at Colleroni explains: “Thanks to a hot, sunny spring and above all to our highly skilled local producers, we can be proud of high quality products, both for their sweetness and size. Despite this, currently we are not satisfied about sales in this part of the campaign.”

“We tried to single out the causes of these unsatisfying sales and we think they are due to the general crisis but also because May has been rainy and cold both in Italy and Europe.”

“The presence of products coming from Spain and North Africa in the Italian market makes the situation worse. Not only do they confuse consumers but they also take sales away from our products and make prices lower.”

Among the positive aspects, as the manager underlines, there is the excellent income per hectare and the product quality, “whose sweetness, due to the earlier hot weather in our areas of production, allows us to be positive for the rest of the campaign. We just hope hot weather will arrive soon in all the other countries in Europe in order to increase sales.”
