Belgium: Delhaize launches virtual shopping concept

Belgian supermarket Delhaize, at Brussels Central Station, has placed a cube, with images of all kinds of different food products. By using a special application users are able to scan the barcodes of any of these products, which will be placed in a bag by one of the employees, this bag will be placed in the store where it can be picked up later. Delhaize hopes the new technology will help to persuade customers to start shopping online.

In the cube you will find 300 of Delhaize’s most popular products and a number of essential food products. You can even order without the need of a mobile Internet connection because the cube also features a Wi-Fi hotspot.

To scan the barcodes of Delhaize’s cube you will need to download their own iPhone application that is available in the App Store. The feature was already available in the application, making it easier to place a just ordered product again in your shopping cart. Once you’ve completed the order, the shopping bag will be prepared and delivered to one of Delhaize’s pickup points. Users will receive a text message when the shopping bag can be picked up.
