US (WA): Organic farm fined $1 million for illegal labor

An organic farm in Washington has been fined $1 million for hiring illegal immigrants. The immigrants were working for the farm initially anyway, were fired, then rehired, after a federal audit.

The fine was issued against Duvall based Herbco international in Seattle this week. Three company officials, including the CEO, pleaded guilty to charges.

Prosecutors reported that the company fired around 90 illegal immigrants as a result of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement audit. However, after the audit was completed the company rehired some of the illegals and asked them to work during the night.

An employee then reported the company to the authority and sent photographs as evidence.

The $1 million fine is payable over the next five years.
