Costa Rica: Initiatives to stimulate export

Conectad@s and VUCE 2.0 are the names of two new initiatives launched by the administration of President Laura Chinchilla in order to make the lives of exporters and small business owners easier. The entities involved are the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Commerce (COMEX) and its leading agency for international trade and commerce, PROCOMER; as well as Banco Nacional and ICE.

VUCE 2.0 is a project expected to roll out in the next few months. It will upgrade the existing Ventanilla Unica para Comercio Exterior (VUCE) a customer service platform that consolidates the myriad laws, regulations, barriers and overall red tape that exporters face when plying their trade. The main objective will be to ensure that this electronic platform can be accessed around the clock, even during national holidays.

Minister Anabel Gonzalez, explained that VUCE 2.0 will have no barriers to access as it will be available to exporters of Costa Rican products whether they are in the country or abroad.

Conectad@s will Serve Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Business in Costa Rica

In an effort to narrow the digital divide, the government also announced this week the launch of Conectad@s (Connected), a partnership between ICE and Banco Nacional that aims to empower small business owners and entrepreneurs who need comprehensive Internet connectivity and online banking services.

It is estimated that up to 8,000 small businesses in Costa Rica do not have adequate access to the Internet. Many of those business owners also lack adequate banking solutions that can increase their productivity. Banco Nacional and ICE will roll out a new set of products specifically designed to meet these needs.
