UK: Jazz apple gets a voice
Will.I.Am, legendary member of the Black Eyed Peas and jury member on the BBC talent show The Voice, mentioned the Jazz apple on Saturday's show. He was talking about a contestant's name, Jaz, when he said, "Boom how do you like them apples?!"
Worldwide Fruit, marketer of Jazz apples in the UK were so delighted that they sent both the BBC and Jaz a box of Jazz apples each.
Gary Harrison, Commercial Manager at Worldwide Fruit says the UK market is ready for the start of the Southern Hemisphere season and demand in the UK for the Jazz apple remains excellent. We are expecting increased volumes of up to 15%, according to Harrison, due to a combination of younger trees coming into production plus smaller fruit size coming out of New Zealand this season, some of which will be destined for the UK.
Harrison said that a strong promotional campaign at major retailers is planned for the apple and Jazz will be showcased at this year's BBC Good Food Show. This event attracts a different kind of consumer, one who is especially interested in food, 125,000 consumers are expected to attend over the 5 days and Worldwide Fruit expect to sample over 30,000 Jazz apples during the event. This is the biggest food event in the UK with celebrity chefs such as James Martin, John Torode, Greg Wallace, The Hairy Bikers attending.
