EU: Grape market depressed, but hope of revival
The grape market is in a rather depressive mood, according to Ron Beijer of Independent Fruit Trade. "The grape harvest in India was good, but they are short of buyers. Plenty of grapes from South Africa and Chile are available. A recovery is expected, but nobody is exactly sure when. For the time being prices are low and a lot less Indian grapes are shipped to Europe, whilst sufficient grapes are available."
The harvest, according to the importer, is with the well-established Indian exporters of high quality. "And controls are severe. They arrange for residue tests in the orchards and if these are not satisfactory, then the whole orchard is rejected. In addition there are laboratory tests in India and here they are checked by Dutch laboratories. And that is the only way in which one may be rehabilitated."
