Oregon Department of Ag extends deadline for onion disposal

The disposal of damage waste, which includes building materials, as well as onions from the many onion sheds which have collapsed or suffered major damage, was one of the issues discussed at the 57th annual meeting of the Idaho and Malheur County Onion Growers' Association.

While building material waste is being accepted at landfills, just where the thousands of pounds of onions from collapsed buildings will end up is still a question.

Environmental Health Director Craig Geddes said he is working to get a permit for the landfill to accept large amounts of onions. However, Geddes said, he is not sure if and when that will happen.

To help onion producers and packers, it was announced at the meeting that the Oregon Department of Agricultural was extending the deadline disposal of onions from March 15 to April 15. However, producers are urged to meet the March date as much as possible.
