Spain: Winds destroy banana and pineapple crops in El Hierro

The island of El Hierro has been one of the most badly hit by the wind and hot weather that struck the Archipelago last weekend. Strong wind gusts of more than 90 kilometres per hour destroyed crops like bananas, avocados and tropical pineapples. According to the president of the Cabildo Herreño, Belén Allende, the losses could exceed one million Euro.

"The damage is huge. In the case of bananas, the plants have been left bare and have burned, and citrus fruits and avocados have been similarly affected," explained Allende. Another crop that has been severely affected is tropical pineapples. "Tropical pineapples have long been an economic engine for El Golfo Valley and almost the entire production has been lost," explained the president.

Given the magnitude of the losses, the President of the regional Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, will travel to the island to assess their extent and visit the area of El Golfo, which was the most affected by the storm.

The wind continues
Strong winds will continue in the Canaries this week, with some areas in the islands expecting some that will reach speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour, with skies that will be just a little cloudy or clear, according to the State Meteorological Agency.
