Tomorrow, the US population will elect its new president. Both Clinton and Trump have been viewed unfavorably by most voters and with one day to go until Election Day, this hasn’t changed. FreshPlaza interviewed several representatives within the produce industry and asked whether they feel the election is going to make a difference for the produce industry. Does it matter which candidate gets elected? Although some produce industry members were very outspoken, others weren’t sure about the impact.

US doesn’t like uncertainty
I don’t know to be honest. It all depends on the overall economy,” says Matthew Gideon with Keystone Fruit Marketing. The US economy doesn’t like uncertainty so depending on how the election goes, if there’s uncertainty there are people who will spend less money and conversely buy less fresh produce or just buy less in general which could hurt us. “I think time will tell. I don’t think anything in the next couple of weeks or next few months is going to change demand or supply. The economy takes a few months to start changing. I hope there aren’t any downturns in the economy or slowdown in consumer spending, but who knows,” shared Gideon.
Robert Schueller with Melissa’s said: “Whether it’s Trump or Clinton, we don’t anticipate anything bad happening. Whoever wins, we’ll ride through it.”
It takes a lot change things
The first reaction of Randy Jacobson with Cecilia Packing is that there will be no impact in the short term. “Long term it depends on who’s elected. It takes a lot to change things; a few elected officials probably won’t make too much difference.”
