The onion market is split down the middle, according to Piet van Liere of FlevoTrade Dronten. “The market is difficult. Bale prices are low compared to the costs of the farmers. That has to change, but I do not see farmer’s prices decreasing right away, because they are stuck with it, they planted less than expected and they do not want to sell their onions for a song. Bale prices should therefore increase, but who knows if that will happen?”
“Despite the expansion of the area, total harvest still disappoints. And that can be seen in the market price. After the bale price dropped to 13 cents, prices recovered somewhat. A lot has been said lately about those low prices, but not much has been done to improve them. Bale prices are currently around 13.50 cent, and I feel as if a bottom has been created on the market. It is a bit exciting to see what will happen next during the season. The open field season is well underway, and not much is happening out of the greenhouses. It will now become clear for sorters what buying and selling prices are, and I expect the market will gain a firmer mood because of that,” Van Liere says.
