Robert Vogel, AGF Direct

"Slow start for broccoli, tough times for cauliflower, and a bleak outlook for iceberg lettuce"

The Dutch open-field vegetable season is currently getting underway at AGF-Direct, with varying market conditions for different vegetables. Robert Vogel of AGF-Direct provides a market update.

"We are slowly starting the Dutch broccoli season this week, but the volumes are not really significant yet. We expect a slightly larger supply later this week," says Robert. He is brief about Dutch iceberg lettuce. "That market is dramatic. It's a battle with all the producing countries. Spain, for example, is holding us back much longer than expected."

AGF-Direct growers have now largely switched to pot cauliflower. "We've just finished the last of the winter cauliflower, but it wasn't entirely satisfactory. In previous years, sales of winter cauliflower were quite good, but not this year. France and Spain had plenty of product, and winter cauliflower simply isn't as heavy as imported cauliflower."

"In about ten days, most cauliflower growers will be in production. Supply is reasonable, but because Spain and France are now running out, prices have fortunately risen a little," says Robert. "Like many other outdoor vegetables, cauliflower went into the ground under good conditions. It's been dry lately, but that's not such a problem here in North Holland because we have a reservoir of fresh water around us."

For chicory, daily trade has been at a moderate level throughout the year. "Although the supply is somewhat greater than last year, there was also extremely little available then. The regular agreements are continuing, but what remains in daily trade is not easy. I don't know where this mood comes from, but it seems as if the market collapses at the slightest hint of extra supply."
