Hortyfruta activates the Quality Standard Extension for aubergine

As of 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, the second category, long aubergines grown under greenhouse conditions in Andalusian territory, will no longer be marketed.

The Crisis Committee of Hortyfruta, the Andalusian Fruit and Vegetable Inter-branch organization, has met again to analyze the market situation of the products that affect it, especially black/long aubergines.

A rigorous analysis has shown that the minimum thresholds set on the consumer's perception of long aubergines have been exceeded, just as had previously happened to green zucchini.

As a result, the member organizations of the Andalusian Inter-branch organization have decided to activate the Quality Extension of the Standard for long aubergines grown under greenhouse conditions. Thus, the sector will not be able to market the second category, long aubergines, since 17:00 on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.

The objective is that only the Extra and First category long aubergines for fresh consumption reach the market, affecting all operators, producers, and marketers in Andalusia.

The moment the Standard Extension is activated, monitoring and control for compliance will also start. Hortyfruta, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development of the Junta de Andalucía, has established a system to verify and control compliance with the agreement in the facilities of the companies that work with products from Andalusia.

Hortyfruta members will continue to carry out a rigorous analysis to assess the situation of long aubergines, as well as zucchini -for which the standard extension has already been activated and deactivated-and cucumber, as these products have been behaving somewhat irregularly at the beginning of this horticultural campaign.
