At Mother Dairy's Safal stores:

Tomato prices almost doubled in one week

At Mother Dairy's Safal outlets, tomato prices have gone up by nearly 100% in the past week. The Delhi-NCR market has over 300 Safal stores. The price spike follows rain-induced supply disruptions in key tomato-producing states. Top quality tomatoes at Safal store I were being retailed at Rs 78 per kg on Tuesday; other varieties are available at lower rates.

A Mother Dairy spokesperson said that with the onset of monsoon, the tomato crop is currently going through a seasonal transition. Rainfall in areas such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have impacted the crop and also restricted its supply, resulting in a demand-supply gap.

Vegetable vendors in New Delhi are selling tomatoes between Rs 80-120 per kg, depending on the location and quality. The prices at Azadpur, India's biggest wholesale market for fruits and vegetables, have risen sharply.
