“Our advantage is that our garlic harvest starts when the Egyptian season ends”

Now that the Egyptian fresh garlic season has come to an end, the opportunities for Turkish garlic are increasing, says Tümen Tarim’s export manager Kerem Tümen: “Our company Tümen Tarim is a recognized family name in Turkey, as we’re one of the largest garlic producers in the country. We’re currently in our fresh garlic season, but are also looking forward to our upcoming dry garlic season, as well as the seasons for the other fruits we do. The fresh green garlic harvest has recently started and our advantage is that our harvest starts while the Egyptians have just finished their season. The quality is looking nice this year as well.”

In a little over a month the dry garlic from Turkey will start making its first appearance, Tümen explains. “After the fresh green garlic season, we’ll move on to the dry garlic. It’s expected that the dry garlic season will start around the 15th of June. The volume of the total garlic production is difficult to calculate, because most of the production comes from small farmers. Our guess would be that volumes are similar to those of last year. However, looking at the 22 and 23 season, both of these years have a larger production than the years that came before 2022.”

Tümen states that the sizes and the skin of this season’s garlic is a lot better than in previous years: “We mostly ship our garlic to the European markets. However, we also send shipments to America and Russia, as well as the Middle East. This year, the quality of production has increased compared to the previous year. Sizes and the skin of the garlic are a lot better than in previous seasons. On top of that, the price is lower than last year, despite higher production and worker cost. That said, demand will also be higher this year, as quality is good and our price is now quite competitive, as we offer a lower price than the Chinese as well.”

Apart from the garlic season, the employees of Tümen Tarim have a busy year in front of them, as the exporter deals in more produce than just garlic: “For Tümen Tarim, the year doesn’t end with the garlic season, as we’ll also be doing our best in kiwis, pomegranates, pears, kaki, citrus, nectarines, peaches and avocados. For now we’re looking forward to the fresh garlic season, we think it’ll be a great one!”
