Upcoming Polish cauliflower planting going well, European shortage could provide opportunities

As cauliflower in Poland is in the process of being planted, farmers are hoping the weather will play nice this year, says Kornelia Lewikowska, purchasing manager for Polish vegetable exporter Green Best: “Farmers have already planted early varieties of cauliflower, and it went without any major problems. Inflation unfortunately affects all of us, which is evident in the stores. Looking at consumer purchases, we are buying less, so the only thing to be concerned about come harvest time, is a drop in demand. We naturally hope to be able to avoid that this season, but I'm more concerned about the weather. Last year's summer was extremely hot and dry, which of course affected the quality of the cauliflower. So, the biggest challenge, although beyond our control, is the weather.”

As prices of cauliflowers in Europe have skyrocketed, there are good indications that the season could be a profitable one, Lewikowska explains. “It's hard to predict the price of cauliflower. Cauliflower quotations are always among those with large fluctuations. There are moments when sales are on the verge of profitability, but then there are also times where growers and exporters are left with a satisfactory profit. Experts notice that there may be a shortage of cauliflower in Europe in the 2023 season. Situations like that always favor higher prices and higher profits. But we’ll have to wait and see what the market will look like during peak-season weeks.”

Preparing for the potentially great season, farmers have assured Lewikowska there will be plenty of cauliflowers, barring any unforeseen circumstances: “The upcoming summer promises to be good for us, many of our customers are already asking about cauliflowers, and at the same time our farmers assure us that if everything goes as planned, there will be plenty of produce available when it’s time to harvest.”
