Brahim El Hasnaoui, Fleuron d'Anjou

“We will have a very good quality of asparagus this year thanks to the cold weather in February”

The asparagus campaign is starting at Fleuron d'Anjou, “a couple of weeks later than in previous years,” explains Brahim El Hasnaoui. This delay is due to the cold weather in February, but it has allowed us to do the ridging in very good conditions. “We will have a very good quality this year despite the delay in growth.” As for the demand, although slow at first due to a limited offer, it is now starting to increase with the arrival of more volumes.

A product that is very sensitive to promotion
An essential product on Easter tables, the asparagus is a vegetable that is “very sensitive to promotional actions”, which are indeed organized every week around Easter. “If we are not active, consumption does not follow.” The asparagus is also very popular throughout the month of May in France. “May 1st, May 8th, Ascension Day until Pentecost, when consumers then want to eat something else.”

For this campaign, Fleuron d’Anjou will produce 800 tons of white and purple asparagus (100 tons of which are organic) and 100 tons of green asparagus (30 tons of which are organic). The production surfaces keep growing for this product that is always in demand.

The asparagus of the Loire Valley will soon have its own PGI
Today, more and more consumers are turning to locavorism, and there is nothing more local than a PGI! For almost two years, Fleuron d'Anjou, in partnership with other operators of the Loire Valley, has been working on obtaining a PGI for the asparagus of the Loire Valley. “The association that will carry the PGI was created during the summer and we are currently working on the specifications that will be filed in the coming months.”
