VBT figures week 12

Cucumber prices drop

In Belgium, more local products are gradually being auctioned. That means the recent truly high prices for greenhouse vegetables at the Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives Federation (VBT) are over.

"Tomatoes are coming in at tradable prices," one exporter noted last week. Cucumber prices have dropped sharply, and strawberries' middle prices are not holding up compared to the five-year average either.

At VBT, tomatoes' median prices were around €2.50/kg, similar to week 11.

Average cucumber prices kept dropping over week 12. The unit price reached €0.22,4. That is a decrease of more than €0.30 in one week, thus dropping below the five-year average.

Organic cucumber prices fell too, but (as often happens) not nearly as sharply. The average unit price for week 12 is almost €0.84.

In week 12, bell pepper prices were exactly the same as the five-year average. With volumes still relatively low, the median price for red bell peppers has fallen below the five-year average at the beginning of the season.

Lettuce middle prices also remain well above the five-year average in week 12. Per piece, that is just under €0.70.

Strawberries' average price has been on par with the five-year average for several weeks.

Meanwhile, the middle price for strawberries has been in line with the five-year average for several weeks, which could prove disappointing, given growers' higher costs.

The Flemish Agriculture and Fisheries Department's agricultural figures page shows all the price graphs.
