Yohan Lanoë, manager of Lanoë Group: “Once the frosts are over, we will start marketing the first volumes this week”

“We expect a shorter but highly anticipated asparagus campaign”

The asparagus campaign will start in Granada with a significant delay due to the drop in temperatures in January and February. “The asparagus harvest in the province normally starts at the end of February, but as of March 10 we haven't harvested any kilos yet,” stated Yohan Lanoë, from Lanoë Group. “The cold has affected the beginning of the campaign. In addition, everything indicates that we'll have lower calibers and a smaller harvest this year due to the lack of water.”

“However, Granada's asparagus is highly appreciated and recognized throughout Europe because of its quality and proximity, so we expect the campaign to be good in terms of prices. In garlic, we have noticed the impact of inflation. We expected the same rise in prices that took place in onions, but in the end, it did not happen. However, we think things will go well in the case of asparagus.”

Lanöe Group will soon be two years old. After launching its Rose de Lautrec pink garlic, the company, which works with farmers in Spain, France, and Belgium, will start to market green asparagus from Granada in Europe this campaign under its Triomphe brand. “We are creating a real partnership with producers and customers, with whom we work throughout the year, which has allowed us to develop a line of quality.”

“Our farmers have 200 hectares of asparagus crops in the province of Granada and this year they have decided to rely on Lanoë Group for its commercialization. We'll market it among the customers in Europe with whom we've worked with Spanish garlic,” Yohan stated. “Our goal will be to export the asparagus from Granada mainly to France, Belgium, and Germany; but we also want to reach the Scandinavian countries with it.”

Spain is not the largest European producer of asparagus (in fact, that honor belongs to Germany, one of the company's main customers), but it is the largest exporter of this vegetable, far surpassing the Netherlands, which is Europe's second-largest asparagus exporter. Granada is Spain's leading asparagus producer.

In 2021, according to official data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Granada accounted for 51% of the almost 61,200 tons of asparagus that the country produced, quadrupling the production of the next largest producing region, Navarra.

“We expect it will be a shorter season but we expect it will be highly anticipated in Europe,” stated Yohan Lanoë. "Once the frosts are over, we'll start marketing the first volumes from the middle of this week.”
